Day 1: What is Photoshop

Hi, welcome to my course “30 Days to Learn Photoshop”. I am Vaibhav and I will be your coach for the next 30 days.

The best part of this course is that you don’t require any knowledge of Photoshop. You might be a complete stranger to Photoshop and yet you’ll be doing basic-moderate operations in Photoshop after 30 days from today provided that you follow my course strictly. The course requires nothing except a computer with Photoshop and a net connection (if you are reading it online). You also don’t have to purchase Photoshop to follow this course. Feeling a bit shocked? Yes, you don’t have to purchase Photoshop to follow this course. You can download Photoshop from adobe.com and start your 30 days trial. Those 30 days are enough to transform you from a complete novice to a beginner-moderate Photoshop user.

You must be expecting a lot of things from this course like am I reading tutorials that are worth reading, should I spend 30-40 minutes every day to read and understand “30 Days to Learn Photoshop”, what am I going to get after 30 days and so on. The answer to this question is much simpler than you are expecting. All 30 tutorials in “30 Days to Learn Photoshop” are worth reading, and spending 30-40 minutes with Photoshop will definitely transform you from a novice to beginner-moderate Photoshop user. You might be wondering that why am I writing beginner (hyphen) moderate Photoshop user? The reason is that making you a beginner user is my job but making yourself a moderate user is your job. Of course, if you want more, you need to learn and practice more. After every tutorial, except for the first few tutorials where I’ll be explaining Photoshop interface, workspace etc., I want you to search for the same thing on the internet and YouTube. For example, if I taught you about Brush Tool (a tool in Photoshop that you’ll be learning later), I want you to search for Brush tool in photoshop on the internet as well as YouTube and learn as much as you can. This is the only way you can transform yourself from a novice user to moderate user in just 30 days. Follow this discipline for a few more months and you’ll become an advanced photoshop user.

Now enough said. The harsh reality is that I want something from you too. Sometimes it’s about given and take. I am giving you the knowledge and I want you to give me something in return. I want you to promise me that you’ll be reading this course every day. I know some of you will complete this course much sooner than 30 days and some of you will complete this course in 30 days, but many of you will fail to complete it in the whole lifetime. This is why I want your promise and I am assuming that you will not break your promise.

Those were the 487 words that you just read. Don’t forget these 487 words whenever you are learning photoshop especially for the next 30 days. Don’t forget that you can never learn 100% of Photoshop, you can never say that I know everything in Photoshop, you can never say that I can do anything in Photoshop. Photoshop is like a universe; it has no ends; it has no limit. As soon as you learn more, you will find a new thing that you are unaware of. Photoshop requires creativity and creativity has no limit, so does photoshop.

So let’s start with today’s tutorial that is introduction to Photoshop.

What is Adobe?

Before I discuss what Photoshop is, I want you to know what Is Adobe (pronounced as u’dow-bee). Adobe Systems Incorporated is a multinational software company which was founded in 1982. It develops and maintains products like Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Flash Pro, Lightroom, InDesign, After Effects etc. Generally all the products are creativity oriented.

What is Photoshop?

Photoshop is an image editing software maintained by Adobe. It was launched on 19 Feb 1990, probably some of us haven’t been born at that time. Photoshop is considered to be the leader among image editing software and it has gained immense popularity such that people are now using it as a verb like “dude, please photoshop my image”, “you photoshopped her nicely”. Although dictionaries don’t recognize word “photoshopped” but I am sure that they will someday. The software allows you to do some basic changes like tweaking brightness, colors etc. and some advanced changes like removing a person form an image.

The best thing is that you don’t have to be a photographer or designer to use Photoshop. You can use Photoshop on images taken by any source including mobile phones, DSLR camera, and even old film cameras. To use Photoshop with reel cameras requires a bit of extra work. Once your negative images are developed, you need to scan your images to create a digital format, and you can use that digital format in photoshop.

How can I Download Photoshop?

Adobe has created a nice and beautiful landing page for Photoshop that lets also lets you download Photoshop. You can go to this link https://www.adobe.com/in/products/photoshop.html to download photoshop. It lets you choose between the versions of photoshop for Mac or Windows. All you need to do is to create a free account first, and you are ready to go. Creation of free account also activates your 30 days free trial provided that you haven’t exhausted your 30 days free trial earlier. In case you have exhausted your free trial earlier, you can use Photoshop at as low as $ 9.99/month.

What can you do with Photoshop?

Believe me, the answer to this question is known among no one in this world. This is because the possibility of doing things in Photoshop is limitless. If somebody is saying you that he knows everything that can be done in Photoshop, he truly doesn’t know the power of photoshop. It is just like saying that there’s nothing after our galaxy or the end point of our galaxy is the end point of our universe. As the universe is expanding day by day, so does creativity in Photoshop.

Now I guess that’s enough for you today. I honestly don’t want you to mug up everything on your very first day. Today’s tutorial was an easy one or perhaps today’s tutorial is not exactly a tutorial. I just want you to give you a brief idea on Photoshop and I guess that I have done it pretty well. If you are thinking that you have not learned enough today, I must say that you are a motivated person and learner but the things that you learned today are more than enough. This course is planned by me and I have years of experience on Photoshop, and believe me that it’s enough for you today.

Now close your computer and sleep, or do your other jobs. There’s no need to for you to search anything online today. You might be wondering that I wrote a full paragraph on searching and learning things that you learned after every tutorial then why am I stopping you after today’s tutorial. Well, the answer is that if you read that line with your full attention, you should also remember that I also wrote that it is not required for the first few tutorials. In case you are wondering why you’ll understand it once you finish the course.

Make sure that you put a reminder on your phone to complete the tomorrow’s tutorial otherwise your today’s effort will go in vain. Always remember that
