Brief Comparison between Photoshop and GIMP

This is a guest post from Mary Roe, Essayacademia.com.

Every invention gets challenged by an equally good or slightly better another invention. It is the law of the world. The field of graphic designs is no exception. Photoshop and GIMP are the two graphics editing software which appears to be on an equal footing for anyone who has a glimpse at both the programs.

GIMP:

GIMP stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a free graphics editing program. Image editing, photo cropping, free-form drawing, retouching, image resizing, multiple images combining and preparing basic animated images are some of the features of GIMP. This program was originally created for UNIX, but it works well with other operating systems like Microsoft Windows, Linux, Mac OS X Solaris, and Free BSD. It has used three Graphical User Interface toolkits since its inception.

Photoshop:

Adobe Photoshop is the graphics editing software developed by the Adobe systems. Older version Photoshop is available in two versions- basic and extended. But with the development of Photoshop CC, Adobe decides to go with only one version of Photoshop which includes all the features. As the name itself indicates, the extended version has a lot more features than the basic version. Photoshop is used for editing the media, animation. A Photoshop document (PSD) is able to store an image in all the available formats in Photoshop. The formats can be layers like masks, color spaces, transparency, spot colors, alpha channels, text, ICC profiles, duotone, and clipping path settings. This makes Photoshop far better than .EPS and .GIF formats. Photoshop can also read and write vector and raster image formats like Adobe Firework, .EPS, .GIF, .JPEG and .PNG. This fact makes Photoshop more advantageous than GIMP.

Both of these software are too advanced for minor applications. If you are an aspirant graphic designer, you need to go for Photoshop. Do check for the compatibility of the hardware and software of your system with the graphic designing software you choose. Photoshop offers you printing with critical color works and the CMYK color models which GIMP does not have. Photoshop comes with easy technical support since it is a product of the Adobe systems. GIMP is open-source software and one has to spend a lot of time finding the solutions on the web. Photoshop is a high-end, smarter software which has lots to offer to the aspiring graphic designers. Photoshop enhances colors, changes backgrounds, creates tricks and makes the old photographs look like new ones. One has to download Photoshop spending some money. Once downloaded, users of Photoshop have an edge over GIMP users.
