Day 6: Understand the Dehaze in Photoshop CC

It must have been an exciting week for photographers and designers as the new Photoshop CC 2015 just came out. Adobe released Photoshop CC 2015 by mainly keeping designers in its mind as the new update has added and improved the designing experience in Photoshop, especially with the addition of Artboard that was one of the primary features of Adobe Illustrator. I’ll be covering up the Artboard in my next few tutorials, and I’ll also explain each new feature in details in my coming tutorials. So sit tight and let the fun begins.

This tutorial is about the new feature Dehaze in Photoshop CC 2015. This tool (or basically a Camera RAW setting) works amazingly. As the name gives you an impression that it only removes haze, but the thing is that it adds haze also. Frankly speaking, I see that the results are good but there are chances of improvements, and I am sure Adobe will improve this feature in the next coming Photoshop update that it releases regularly.

As the name gives you an impression that it only removes haze, but the thing is that it adds haze also

 What is Dehaze in Photoshop?

Probably you already guessed the function of this feature. De-Haze; it removes haze from a photo. This is probably one of the most requested features from the people living on the northern side of our planet. Lol! just kidding!

Before the launch of this feature, you also could remove or add Haze in Photoshop, but that was time-consuming. I uploaded a tutorial on YouTube on How to add Mist in Photoshop. With a speed of 150%, the tutorial is about 8 minutes long. So you can imagine the time it used to take to add haze in Photoshop. But the launch of this feature, haze can be added or removed within a few seconds or does it? Let’s find out.

Where is Dehaze Option Located in Photoshop?

For a beginner, it must be rather difficult to locate the dehaze option on Photoshop; it can also be difficult for a moderate, and a advanced users. The fact that it’s not included as an adjustment layer makes it difficult to locate.

You can find the new dehaze in Photoshop CC 2015 in Camera RAW filter. Go to Filter>Camera RAW Filter, and switch to Effect tab.

How to Use Dehaze in Photoshop CC 2015?

So now let’s begin to understand how Dehaze works in Photoshop CC 2015. I’ll be explaining this by applying this feature on a stock image.

Step 1

Before we use Dehaze in Photoshop, I would like to duplicate my background layer so that in case anything goes wrong, I will still have the backup. You can do it by pressing Ctrl+J/Cmd+J.

Step 2

Now locate the Effects filter. In Fig. 2, I have encircled it for you.

Step 3

There you should see the Dehaze slider that’s present at the top. Slide it to the right and you remove haze; slide it to left and you add haze.

I have moved the slider to the extreme right, hence it removed the haze as much as possible. I cannot say that the haze is completely gone but still this feature works amazingly. It’s better to have something than nothing; in fact this feature is much more than something.

If you are a kind of person who notices things, you must have noticed that dehaze has darken my image, especially the shadowy region. I am going to fix it in my next step.

Step 4

Now I can close Camera RAW and go all the way back to adjustment sliders and play with levels or curves to do something with my underexposed regions. But I choose not to. To fix my underexposed region, I am going to back to the Basic tab in Camera RAW, and tweak some sliders.

Fig 4 shows the settings that work well for this image. Now I can close Camera RAW with a sense of great satisfaction that I have removed most of the haze within seconds, or minutes.

In the next step, I am going to show you how to add haze with dehaze slider.

Step 5

This step teaches you add haze with the help of dehaze slider in Photoshop. Before I performed this step, I have reset all the settings that I did in the previous step.

Now again go back to the Effects slider.

This time, you need to drag the Dehaze slider to the left side. This adds haze.

I am not sure how it works, and like you, I have several questions in my mind also. How does this work? Does it sample just a little portion or the whole image for this feature? How can I use it most effectively? To find out answers, probably I need to read Photoshop CC 2015 help or FAQ articles that are ultra boring to read, and written in ultra formal language.
