Add Snow using Photoshop

Hello guys, it has been a long time since I have uploaded any tutorial. Anyways, I am sorry for that. Currently, I am being busy with some other projects.

So summer is here and about to be gone. It really gave us a little bit of pain, and I don’t know about you guys, but I am desperately waiting for winter. So I decided to create a tutorial on adding artificial snow using Photoshop. This tutorial is going to be an easy one and may not take more than more than 15 minutes if you are aware of filters in Photoshop.

Let’s look at the “after” and “before” version of the image. This is exactly looking like a winter season, isn’t it?

FINAL

INITIAL

STEP 1

The first thing that we need to do is to create a new layer. You can either do it by going to Layer>New>Layer or you can do it by pressing Ctrl+Shift+N/Cmd+Shift+N. Rename the layer to Snowfall or whatever suits you.

STEP 2

Now we are going to fill Snowfall with Black color. Go to Edit>Fill. Then fill it with Black color.

After that, change the Blend Mode of Snowfall to Screen.

Your image should look like this.

STEP 3

Time to add snow. We are going to do this by adding noise and then we’ll use some filters to make that noise looks like snow. Go to Filter>Noise>Add Noise.

Change the settings and make them look like the one shown below.

Now we need to increase the size of the noise to make them appear as snow. Activate Free Transform Tool by pressing Ctrl+T/Cmd+T and increase the Width and Height to 500%. After than press Enter/Return.

Your image should look like the one shown below.

STEP 4

Let’s give them a little bit of motion. Go Filter>Blur>Motion Blur.

Your image should look like this one.

STEP 5

Time to crystallize it. Go to Filter>Pixelate>Crystallize. Increase the size to 10.

Your image should look like the one shown below.

STEP 6

Let’s adjust the intensity of snow. This can be done via Levels. Go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Levels. First, you need to click on Create Clipping Path which is encircled with Yellow color. This will ensure us that any adjustment you do will only affect the layer just below it. For example, if you look at my layer panel, the layer just below the Levels is Snowfall. So any adjustment is Levels would only affect Snowfall layer, not the whole image.

Now change the levels which suit you best.

And we are done here. Here’s the final version.
