We don’t want to lighten up the whole image. We just want to lighten up the highlights of the hair. To achieve it we need to use Layer Mask. To add layer mask go to Layer>Layer Mask>Hide All and this will bring your image back to normal. It will also add a black rectangular box adjacent to your “Layer 1”.
